The Film Unit was formed with the objective of promoting our U3A and other projects of interest.

We are keen to include members with professional career experience in production planning, directing, scripting, voice overs, video gathering, audio, editing and performing.

Groups of members go out on a Saturday morning to pick up litter in various locations using equipment provided by Ards & North Down Borough |Council.

In normal circumstances we finish with tea or coffee at a local cafe.

We were delighted that the pilot British Sign Language for Deaf People class held on February 12^th was such a success and we decided to follow it up with a series of six classes, running on alternate Friday afternoons beginning March 12^th from 2.00pm - 3.15pm.

We all agree that face-to-face is preferable to ZOOM, but that’s where we are now, and it’s a start.

From experience we know that the 50,000 people in Northern Ireland who rely on lip-reading and/or sign language for communication are very grateful when they meet ‘hearing’ people who have gone to the trouble to learn their language, albeit at a basic level.

We started with learning the alphabet - quite easy and it means we can spell out our names.  Signs such as ‘Good morning,’ or ‘Nice to see you,’ or ‘My name is ...’ or ‘How are you?’ are simple and easy to learn, and we benefit from the fun and mental stimulation of learning a new language.

This group arranges occasional outings for formerly active older members who are no longer able to participate fully in normal U3A activities.  Volunteer drivers and supporters are available to help, if necessary.  If you are interested in joining the group, either as a participant or driver/supporter, or know of someone who would enjoy an outing, please contact the Convenor or Leaders for further information.
